Encounters: in 50 Objects
About the Book Series
Is a series of books that look at different topics in history and explore how material culture can provide an insight into that topic. The books offer engaging, wellresearched introductions to fifty key objects, making it easy for lecturers to integrate material culture into the study of the past and for undergraduate students to gain a reliable, richly detailed overview.
The books contain a short introduction that orientates the readers to the particular issues and context surrounding material culture of the period, as relates to the topic of the volume and each individual chapter concludes with a brief but targeted list of suggestions for further reading. Each chapter should contain at least one image of the object discussed alongside an analysis and context of the significance of the item. Taken as a whole, readers will see these fifty objects not as isolated cases, but rather as part of a larger and more complex tapestry, one that connects them to one another as well as the period.
